Pre-Event Plastic Surgery: How Soon in Advance Should a Procedure be Done?

Over 1.4 million Americans choose to get plastic surgery annually. The most popular procedures are breast augmentation and liposuction. There are numerous reasons why people decide to get plastic surgery, but sometimes an upcoming event can be the catalyst. High school reunions, black-tie events, or weddings may leave us wondering what to wear and how to look our best in outfits. Pre-event plastic surgery can be done in a timeframe between one month, two weeks to no downtime for plastic surgery procedures.

Pre-Event Plastic Surgery

A recent article shared a question from a woman wondering how far in advance she should get pre-event plastic surgery for her daughter’s wedding. Dr. Brian Hass, MD recommended that procedures such as body contouring, tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast procedures are best planned far in advance.

Breast augmentation

One of the most popular procedures, breast augmentation, has a one-week recovery period. Most people go back to work at a desk job within 5 to 7 days. If you have a physical job, you would need a month to recover as exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for 30 days.

Another popular procedure, liposuction has a very similar recovery period to breast augmentation. Depending on the size of the area treated you can typically return to work within one to two weeks after surgery, but compression garments are worn for one month at which time light exercise can be resumed. Tummy tucks may have a more extended recovery period than breast augmentation and liposuction. Post-operative garments must be worn for one month with small tubes that drain excess blood or fluid. The garments are used in both liposuction and tummy tucks to offer support and help with contouring for a smooth look.

Cool Sculpting

If you are seeking a procedure with no downtime, Cool Sculpting might be the answer. This fat-freezing procedure works well on stubborn areas of fat, but it takes 9-12 weeks to see the final results as your body processes and eliminates it. This procedure would have to be planned even further in advance than traditional procedures if you wanted it for a specific event.

No matter what procedure you are interested in Dr. Hass recommends 3 to 6 months before any significant date for recovery. Some events require fittings for dresses or suits, and during that time it is best to be completely healed from surgery. It’s also advised to allow time to look equally amazing at rehearsal dinners or pre-event photoshoots. When it comes to surgery for a special occasion, it’s never too soon to get started on achieving your desired look.
