Male Breast Reduction is on The Rise

Why do you need a Male Breast Reduction or Gynecomastia?

Overdeveloped breast tissue in males is referred to as gynecomastia. Allure magazine revealed that The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a 7% decline in female breast reduction from 2015 to 2016 and a 1% increase in male breast reduction. A 1% increase may not seem like much, but the procedure has been rising steadily from 2010 to 2016 with a 36% increase overall. Excess breast tissue doesn’t have many physical health risks, but the mental toll can be debilitating. Bullying or unusual looks can cause intense anxiety, especially in teens. The low self-esteem that results in not having a typical male build can make dating, going to the beach, or playing a sport very difficult.

Cause of Male Breasts

The cause of male breasts is due to a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. At birth, 50% of boys have excess breast tissue because of their mom’s estrogen. When men reach the age of 50 up to 25% will develop excess breast tissue due to the natural decline of testosterone. Hormonal imbalances can also occur from medications, diet, or alcohol and drug use. When a patient is seen for gynecomastia the first step is to make sure any underlying problems are fixed as it may eliminate the need for a breast reduction surgery at all.

Plastic Surgery Procedures for Male Breast Reduction

One of the most popular methods to remove fat from the breast is liposuction based which is a good choice if there isn’t excessive loose skin. A small cut is made under the breast (only 3 to 4 millimeters), the area is numbed, and the fat is suctioned out. A second, less popular method involves cutting out tissue. It would be done if a patient had loose skin in addition to the extra fat. For more extensive problems removing the tissue isn’t enough and the breast glandular tissue has to be removed to get the best results and minimize the chance of reoccurrence. The procedure is almost like a female breast reduction and result in scars under the breast and around the nipple. These plastic surgery procedures come with real medical benefits. Both procedures are outpatient, and the liposuction-based option has a quicker recovery period-usually two to three days versus one week of recovery for the more extensive procedure.

Is Male Breast Reduction safe?

As with all surgery, there is always a chance infection, or bleeding could occur. Also, all breast surgeries including breast augmentation and female breast reductions carry the risk of nipple damage or loss of sensation. The occurrence of all these is sporadic. If you are seeking male breast reduction surgery for yourself or someone else do your research and choose a qualified plastic surgeon-preferably one with ample experience in male plastic surgery.
